III-B Geology of the Black Hills Blog Response

ANSWER THE FOLLOWING

1. Write a summary of how the Black Hills formed. What are the events that led to their formations?

2. Would the Badlands exist if weathering/erosion had not taken place? Why? or Why not?

3. The major uplift of the Black Hills occurred 70 million years ago. What do you think that area of the South Dakota looked like 40 million years ago?

4. What do you think the Black Hills and Badlands will look like in another 40 million years

1. The black hills formed by weathering and erosion
2. No because erosion caused it so if erosion didn't happen the badlands wouldn't be there
3. I think it looked like a small version of what it is now
4. I think it will be more formed and look much differently from now

Rocks were deposited on older rocks and thats how the Black Hills were formed. If weathering and erosion had not taken place the Badlands would not exist because weathering and erosion formed it. 70 million years ago there probably wasn't Badlands because the rocks weren't as developed as now because of depostition. In 40 million years the Badlands will most likely be weathered and erodided away.

1.Weathering & eroision.
2.yes
3 It would be more hills, than mountians.
4.it will look diffrently from how it is now. Also a flat land.

1) Rocks built up over eachoter starting with granite and schist and then on top of that was limestone and the on top of that is red shale and then on top the youngest is sandstone
2)no because weathering and erosion is what made it
3)it probably was weathered and eroded away
4)i think it would look much different and it will be really small and eroded

1.Weathering and eroision.
2.yes, it would just be plains if not
3 It would be more hills, than mountians.
4.it will look diffrently from how it is now.

1 The black hills were formed by weathering and erosion...this is chemical and mechanical weathering.
2 No, because if erosion caused it, so if erosion wouldn't have happened the bad lands wouldntbe there.
3 I think there were other things caused by wrosionand weathering but I dint think the badlands were created yet.
4 Ithink the badlands will be even more eroded and weathered. It will definitely look different than how it looks now.

1. The black hills were formed by erosion and deposition.

2. NO, because if erosion hadn't happend, the rocks never would have formed the badlands.

3. The area might have been bigger, and I think alot of the black hills and badlands will be gone in 40 million years.

Andrew Bender said...

1.weathering and erosion formed the black hills by depositing new rocks on old rocks.

2.No, because weathering and erosion were what formed it.

3. In 40 million years, either the whole thing is underwater due to climate change or they will be sunken even further from weathering and erosion.

Brooke Hankel said...

Weathering and erosion.

No because they were made by erosion.

I think that they were more smooth because they hadn't had the 30 million years more of erosion.

I think that they will be even more mountainous or even flat.

Lauren Torkelson said...

1. Pressurized rock pushed up other layers of rock.
2. No because without weathering and erosion it would look more flat.
3. Smaller because of weathering and erosion and even smaller because of that in 40 million years.

Gabriel Hofer, Caleb Hanisch said...

1.Uplift cause the hills to form and weathering and erosionn caused the black hills to flatten out.
2.The bad lands wouldn't exist. weathering and erosion.
3.The hills would be really tall 40 million years ago.
4. I predict the black hills will be even flatter in another 40 million years.

1) The black hills were formed by layers of rock being uplifted by hot, molten rock. The other layers of soft rock weathered away and the hard, granite was left as the highest elevation.
2) No, because the badlands were formed from the weathered sediment of the black hills.
3) I think that the black hills were smaller with a lower elevation, and they will be taller with a higher elevation in the future.

Peter and Brennen said...

The black hills formed because of uplifting. They would be flat 40 million years ago. The badlands would also just be flat with nothing but land. They would both have been very boring 40 million years ago.

1. Erosion and weathering got rid of the redshale and limestone on the top, revealing the granite and shcist that makes up the black hills.

2. No, the badlands were formed from wind erosion and weathering.

3. 40 million years ago, I think that south Dakota a little mountainous but still mostly flat. Since the world will end in 2012, I don't have to worry about what it will look like in 40 million years.

1. Rocks were deposited on other rocks, gradually creating the mountain. Then, the weaker top layers of rock started to erode away.
2. No, weathering and erosion formed them.
3. -40: Taller, less eroded. +40: shorter, more eroded.

Kyle and Alli (ARKS) said...

1.) Materials built up on top of strong, old rocks and eventually, through weathering and erosion the younger rocks fell off very dramatically (as dramatic as rocks can be over millions of years) thus creating the Badlands.

2.) No, we do not believe so. The badlands are the Black Hills left overs, as the weak rocks on the top of the hills fall down and breakup. It's like the Black Hills garbage dump or somethin'

3.) 40 million years ago, the Black Hills were about twice as high as they are now! In 40 million years, the Bad Lands will be taller and the Black Hills shorter.

1. Uplift of the rock, weathering and erosion.
2. No, because the erosion and weathering formed them

2. no they were created by weathering and erosion.
3.It would be taller because it is less eroded
4.They will be both much smaller.

1)Many rocks in order from bottom to top is Granit and Shist at the bottom. Limestone is next, then Red Shale, them sandstone. They all had an uplife making the one on the bottom to the very top.
2)No, they both took a big part in making the bandlands.
3)they would of erodied or weathered away later on.
4)Look more different than what it si now.

The black hills were made from erosion and weathering.

No because it used to not be very much

They were much taller. In 40 million years they will be alot smaller.

1. Weathering and Ersion
2. No because Erosion was the one that made the badlands so yeah
3. VERRY "MOUNTINIUS" (kandis made that word up..)

1. The Black Hills were formed by weatherng and erosion
2.no because if weathering and erosion didn't happen it would be just a rock hill
3.it would be smaller because of weathering and erosion

1.) The black hills were formed by weathering and ersoion. The dust made by the weaterhing and erosion has been carryied to the bad lands.
2.)NO!!!! They would be a platue if think cuz the ersion and weathering had moved teh rock and shaped it.
3.)I think that it would have been flatter but not quite flat. i think there would be hills and other things like that.
4.)I think the balck hills would be the black mountins and the bad lands would be like the grand cannyon.

Steven Diaconu & Brooke Hirsch said...

1.The black hill formed from weathering and erosion.

2.no, because it was formed by weathering and erosion.

3.I would be flat like a flat land. also very diffrent.

4.I think it will be more formed And look very diffrent.

Rocks deposited on older rocks that's how the Black Hills were formed. No because it can't happen without erosion. Looked smaller than it does know. More developed and bigger. they will look alot different.

1. the black hills formed from years and years old weathering and erosion
2.no the bad lands were formed from weathering and erosion which caused the granite and schist to come up
3.Ithink it would have been larger before the erosion and weathering
4.I think there would be more hills than there is muntains now.

Makenzie McGregor said...

1. The Black Hills were formed by the sediment underneath rising up.
2. No, because the Badlands was formed with the Black Hills and that is what caused it to rise.
3. They were flatter and in another 40 million years they might be eroded away.

Caleb Frame said...

1.The Black Hills were formed by weathering and erosion.
2.No Erosion allowed the badlands to form in the first place so if it didn't take place the Badlands wouldn't exist.
3.I think they looked very flat.
4.I think it would look smaller and look craggier than they are now.

1.The blsck hills were formed by erosion & weathering
2.No because erosion is the reason the badlands are there because of erosion so without they would not be there
3.I think that the blackhills will be even more eroded away and the elevation will be even lower
4. They will be lower, much lower, then they are now

1. The Black Hills of South Dakota were formed by weathering and erosion.

2. No. Because the wind eroded it's shape, without erosion, the Badlands would probably be a plataeu or something.

3. 40 million years ago, the badlands probably wouldn't be so windy or sandy, and the Black Hills wouldn't be so big or have any faces on it :)

4. In another 40 million years, I think the Badlands will finally be blown to pieces by the wind, and the Black Hills will have no more faces, and be a little shorter.

1) Each layer of rock over time left a layer cause the diff. types of rocks to form
2) No because the weathering created sediment and the erosion took it away.(Badlands)
3) I think it was all a flat prarie until the rock began to erode into what is know the black hills

Daimytryeh Nelson said...

1. They were formed though weathering and erosion. Rain and wind caused the hill to move and change formation, they were uplifted and changed.
2. No because the rocks formed from the weathering and erosion.
3. I think they probably very grassy.
4. They probably won't be as tall as they are now do to erosion and weathering.

sheldon pettibone said...

1. the granit under the black hills is the stonger then the other rock and the pushes it self up under the other rock so it gets taller.
2. the badlands would never exist if weathering or erosion ever took place cause the ersoion took the old rock of the black hills to make the badlands.
3. 40 million years ago it look promble like the bad lands just old ersoion rock sent from other rocks, but if it look like 40 millions years from now it would be bigger but it would just be wearthed so bad it would not look the same.

1.) Rocks built up, and then they were eroded away.
2.) No. Erosion carried sediment from the Black Hills to the area that became the Badlands.
3.) I think it looked flat without the Black Hills being taller than the rest of the land.
4.) I don't think they would exist because the uplift made the Black Hills tall, and then rocks built up onto that.

Lauren Cockrum said...

1. The black hills used to be a flat land then erosion took place.
2. no because they were blowen around and then a natural landscape formed.
3.It was a flat grassy or desert type of land.
4. The badlands will look diffrent but still the same concept, and the black hills will be more rounded at the top and taller because of erosion.

The Black hills formed by weathering
No because the rock wouldnt get epoused
Mostly flat ground
Just a little hilly

cole said...

The black hills were once by the sea and there was no trees to hold the sediment that was blowing onto the hill then it all stayed compact together and formed the hill.

No because it is there because all the loss sediment that was onthe top of the hills were blowenoff the top of the hill and carried to where the badlands are today.

It was probably still really tall and had a higher elevation and the badlands were not as visible as it is today because not as much of the hill had eroded away yet.

The hill will probably not be as tall and the badlands will have a lot more sand and dirt on it and it will be taller than it is now.

1. The Black hills were formed because of water and wind.... also known as weathering and erosion

2.no, because it was caused by erosion, if erosion didn't happen the bad lands wouldn't of been there.

3.i think the Black hills would look very small and flat

4.The black hills might get a little smaller but, they should looke pretty much the same. The badlands will probably get bigger and bigger because as the rock and sand erode away the land gets deeper and depper into the ground
